From prom season to football season, students everywhere in middle and high school are navigating love, dating and relationships.
Yet for all the relationships that are safe and healthy, one in five female high school students and one in 10 male high school students who date have been affected by some form of dating violence, with one out of 10 students experiencing some form of physical violence.
Encourage and empower them to remove themselves from situations where they feel uncomfortable.
Whether they call it “dating,” “going out,” “hanging out” or “being boyfriend and girlfriend,” it all means the same thing – they are entering into a relationship. While it may seem more like puppy love, the things teenagers learn in their first dating relationships – such as how to treat others and how they expect to be treated – will affect their future relationships. These formative years can have dire consequences when it comes to dating violence. is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner – a figure that far exceeds victimization rates for other types of violence affecting youth.Looking at the nation’s graduation statistics calls us to action in examining how to help drive students to success during their high school matriculation.Roughly 1.2 million students did not graduate from high school in 2011; the lost lifetime earnings for that class of dropouts alone total 4 billion (Alliance for Excellent Education (Alliance), “The High Cost of High School Dropouts,” 2011).Before hooking up, there was “petting,” and everyone was doing it.In the 1940s and ’50s, Alfred Kinsey defined petting as “deliberately touching body parts above or below the waist” (thus distinguishing it from “necking,” or general body contact sustained while making out).In terms of the baseball metaphor, petting covered everything between first base and home plate., the most prestigious magazines in America, regularly included features on “These Wild Young People” written by “one of them.”At least one audience was guaranteed to take an interest: the petters’ parents.Between 19, a dramatic demographic shift changed family dynamics across the United States. By 1900, the average American woman was having only half as many children as she would have three generations earlier. From physical and sexual abuse to verbal and emotional, digital, and financial abuse, dating violence encompasses a wide range of unhealthy and abusive actions used to exert power and control over another person. One of the best methods for deterring abuse is for teachers to understand what dating violence looks like, how they can take action to prevent it and how to help their students who are experiencing abuse. If students have a reason that would be considered to be an excused absence (see below), have them bring official documentation to our Attendance Office where they will take care of marking the absence excused.
